Hurricane Safety Tips


  1. Listen to the radio or TV for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS),
  2. Fill your car’s gas tank,
  3. Keep an extra propane tank available,
  4. Turn your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest setting and keep them closed as much as possible,
  5. Bring inside all things from the outside that could be picked up by the wind (flower pots, lawn chairs, etc.),
  6. Create a hurricane evacuation plan with members of your household,
  7. Obey evacuation orders,
  8. Purchase flood insurance for your household,
  9. Stock up on flashlights, batteries, candles, and non-perishable foods,
  10. Purchase a gas-powered generator,
  11. Stock up on bottled water (at least a 3-day supply or one gallon per person per day),
  12. Purchase excess food and medications for pets,
  13. Purchase a battery-powered or hand-crank radio,
  14. Purchase a first aid kit,
  15. Have at least a 7-day supply of all medications,
  16. Stock up on sanitation and personal hygiene items,
  17. Make sure your cell phone is fully charged,
  18. Have your personal documents stored in a place where they can easily be gathered and taken with you should you have to evacuate (passports, birth certificates, etc.),
  19. Stock up on insect repellent and sunscreen,
  20. Have extra cash on hand in case electricity is out for an extended time

Hurricane season is upon us in South Florida.  Being prepared now will pay dividends in the future.  While it may have been a decade since the last hurricane hit, our luck will eventually run out.  Stay safe!
