How to Choose the Right Doctor for Your Personal Injury Case

After an accident, there are several extremely important things you can do to help establish your personal injury case.  For example, immediately after an accident seek medical treatment.  Now, while seeking medical treatment may sound extremely simple, in reality, it is far from simple. In fact, those searching for the right doctor will be faced with several hurdles.

First and foremost, keep in mind you will need to choose a medical provider that specializes in the area of your body injured. While going to your primary care physician (PCP) immediately after an accident for neck pain is a good start, you will still need to go see a specialist. Keep in mind that you will need to prove the accident caused your injuries. A specialist will have a much better understanding of methods of treating your injuries and what future treatment will be required. Also, the insurance company will bring their specialist to court to argue he is more experienced than your PCP.

In addition, he will argue you are not injured and attempt to discredit your PCP for lack of specialization in treating the affected parts of your body. In other words, the insurance company will bring a loaded gun to a fight in which you only have a knife.  Clearly, they will win.  As such, it is extremely important you have your own medical specialist ready to testify on your behalf.

Another hurdle an individual seeking the right doctor for a personal injury case will have to overcome relates to bias.  Do not forget that not all doctors will have your best interest in mind.  Sadly, some doctors perform lots of work for certain automobile insurance companies.  As such, that doctor may have the insurance companies best interest in mind instead of yours.

Finally, when you do pick a specialist, do not forget not all specialists carry board certification.  Board certification means your doctor has voluntarily decided to go beyond the basic required medical license and take additional exams. As you can imagine, in a court of law a board-certified physician will likely be found more credible when compared to a non-board-certified physician. As such, make sure your medical specialist has acquired board certification in his or her area of specialty.
