Faulty Airbag Recalls Continue with Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda

Earlier this week, it was discovered that certain car models from Honda, Mazda, and Nissan have a faulty airbag issue that shoots shrapnel at passengers when the airbag is deployed.  The airbags involved in this recall are from Japan’s Takata Corp., a company that manufactures airbags, seat belts, steering wheels, and several other auto parts.

Takata, a Tokyo-based company, credits the malfunction of the airbags to a high amount of humidity.  However, last week they also admitted that they stored some chemicals improperly and had mishandled the manufacturing of the explosive propellant that deploys the airbag.

Toyota Recalls

This week’s almost 3 million car recall comes after a similar one was announced from Toyota earlier in the month.  Toyota reported that they would be recalling 2.3 million cars worldwide due to the same airbag issue from Takata Corp.  The cars involved in the Toyota recall were manufactured between 2002 and 2007, and include models Corolla, Matrix, Tundra, Yaris, and Camry.

Honda Recalls

Now, Honda Motor Company has recalled 2.03 million cars that were manufactured between 2000 and 2005. This is the second time Honda has recalled cars due to Takata Corp. and an airbag defect. Last year 1 million cars were recalled. The cars included in this new set of Honda recalls include Fit, Element, and CR-v.

Nissan and Mazda Recalls

Like Honda, both Nissan and Mazda issued a similar recall last year, and have now also issued the same recall over this “exploding” airbag defect. The car models involved in these recalls are as follows:

  • Nissan: The Cube, X-Trail, and some Infiniti models manufactured between 2001 and 2003
  • Mazda: The Atenza and RX-8 manufactured between 2002 and 2004

These car companies are working hard to start the recall in areas affected by high humidity, such as Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. However, Honda has also included Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas.
