Safe-Driving Contract for Guardians and Minor Drivers

Learning to drive is an exciting time for a teenager. A driver’s license offers a new level of independence, but it also brings new level of responsibility. The best way to instill that sense of responsibility in your teen is to equip them with information – and implement fair rules for the road.

Why Do You Need a Parent-Teen Driving Agreement?

89% of teens say it is important to them that their parents view them as responsible. While they may not say they want rules, they thrive when expectations are clear. According to a study supported by the General Motors Foundation, when parents and teens discuss rules for driving and come to a formal agreement, teens are less likely to engage in risky behavior behind the wheel. For example, teenagers with explicit family rules were more likely to wear their seat belts and less likely to drive distracted or speed.

What’s Inside a Teenage Driver’s Contract?

It may seem like talking to teenagers is easier said than done, but a safe-driving contract is a useful tool to guide your conversation. A typical contract addresses rules for everything from seat belt use to:

  • Driving while using a mobile device
  • Driving while tired, upset, or anxious
  • Driving with too many passengers
  • Driving while under the influence
  • Driving in adverse weather conditions
