Heparin Sodium
Heparin: What is it?
The drug Heparin Sodium is an anticoagulant that is used for the purpose of preventing blood clots. Heparin has been used in patients to prevent blood clotting in the arteries, veins, and lungs, and has also been used preceding surgery in which blood clotting is a concern. Following multiple reports that detail Heparin’s negative and, in some cases, deadly effects, the drug’s primary manufacturer, Baxter International, recalled all remaining supplies of Heparin.
Manufacturing and Production
Baxter International has manufactured Heparin in differing doses, such as single-dose vials, multi-dose vials, and diluted solutions. The drug is produced by a Wisconsin-based company called Scientific Protein Laboratories LLC, and is made in their Wisconsin production plant as well as their production plant located overseas in China.
Side Effects
Some of Heparin’s possible adverse side effects include disorientation, numbness, pain and swelling in the legs, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and excessive sweating. In more extreme instances, Heparin has been known to cause rapidly falling blood pressure, which can be fatal.
While there are other anticoagulant drugs which could be used in place of Heparin to prevent blood clotting, they are known to not work as fast and their effects are not as easily reversed.
